MABISZ, the Hungarian Insurance Association, says they are ready to support the Charter of Road Traffic Victims’ Rights in their goal of raising awareness around the rights of road traffic accident victims. They also outlined their support for the “timely and transparent handling of claims” as envisioned by the Charter.
Since the end of the insurance monopoly in Hungary (1986), several insurance companies have been established in the country. The role of state-owned insurance companies was taken over by the newly formed public limited companies and insurance associations. At the same time, there was a radical change in the legal field of insurance, which required companies to concentrate their interests in a professional association.
On November 14, 1990, eight insurance companies founded the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies (MABISZ). Currently it has 25 members. MABISZ’s activities are divided into two main areas: the professional advocacy activities of the Association and the tasks related to third-party motor liability insurance. Being part of the European Union, the Hungarian insurance market is in close contact with EU bodies and other Member States. In order to maintain these relationships, MABISZ is a member of Insurance Europe, a European umbrella organization for insurance associations and keeps contact with a number of other international organizations.
The Charter of Road Traffic Victims’ Rights was created to help people who are the victims of road traffic accidents. Inspired by the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it was developed by COB, the Institute of European Traffic Law (IETL) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) with the objective of encouraging a strong standard of care towards those victims from all involved in providing compensation.
Speaking about their decision to become an official supporter of the Charter of Road Traffic Victims’ Rights, Dániel Molnos, Secretary General of MABISZ said, “The Hungarian Insurance Association is ready to support the Charter’s goal of raising awareness of the rights of road traffic accident victims. We also strongly support the Charter in preparing a general framework for the timely and transparent handling of claims. The Hungarian Insurance Association is a credible and influential representative of the Hungarian national economy, both in promoting motor insurance and in ensuring the legal and financial background for compensation. That’s why our Association is proud to be the member of the Charter and support its initiatives.”
Mr. Molnos’s comments were echoed by his colleague Csaba Kerékgyártó, Head of General Secretariat at MABISZ, who said, “The Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies has a 35-year-old history in the Hungarian insurance sector. According to a survey conducted by Századvég Research Center Hungary on May 31, 2025, public confidence in insurance companies rose to 52.1% this year. According to the analysis, this means that more than half of Hungarian citizens trust insurance companies. Another telling piece of data from this poll is that the overall satisfaction index for insurance companies currently stands at 80 points on a scale of 0 to 100, which is in line with the average measured over the past ten years. This means that the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies is committed to strengthening cooperation between the Hungarian society and the Hungarian insurance sector, as well as enhancing the social utility of the Hungarian insurance sector. We consider the objectives of the Charter to be entirely acceptable and worthy of support, also in line with our social responsibility,” Mr. Kerékgyártó concluded.
